This month we celebrate Presidents' Day. We have had a few presidents who not only appreciate America's Godly heritage, but also surely would recognize that America is teetering on the brink of disaster because we have abandoned the very foundation of our liberty. The account which follows is a suggestion of what President Washington would say if he were to return to the United States today. Contributing to this simulation were Zeldon Nelson, Chairman of the Board of NCCS and Ronald Mann, former deputy director of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution. Let us now hear what President Washington would say to us.
George Washington Returns
I arrived here in heaven, your time, at 10:20 p.m. on December 14, 1799, just a little over 200 years ago. Since my arrival, I have seen Jesus Christ in action. Remember, He said, "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." (John 14: 2-3) Indeed mansions are being prepared here in heaven for the good people of the earth. I am prohibited from saying more about our preparations for your coming.
Heaven's Blessings May Be Withdrawn from America
Now I want to get right to the reason why I was assigned to return. My dear friend and fellow patriot, Thomas Jefferson, said, "When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation." In our councils here in heaven, serious consideration is being given to withdrawing the blessings of heaven from this people, but as Jefferson indicated, a decent respect for mankind requires that we first declare to you the causes which impel us to withhold the blessings of heaven from you. The council has instructed me to say in all soberness that what Moses said to Israel over three thousand years ago also applies to America today. He said, "And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth.... But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.... The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me." (Deut. 28:20)
Plain and Precious Truths Purposely Removed
I have been commanded to say, in the name of Jesus Christ, that this nation shall be broken up and removed out of her place except she repents. The other founders and I are very upset and even angry that you have removed from your school history books and your political dialog our testimonies of God's hand in the setting up of this nation. One of the main reasons why so many of your youth are stumbling and dwindling in unbelief is because our plain and sacred testimonies of God are not being shared with them. God lives! I have seen Him. Christ lives! I have also seen Him. They helped us every step of the way in the setting up of this nation. The reason I was sent to deliver this warning is because you call me the father of your country. I am going to quote the author of Hebrews with respect to being called the father of your country. "Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh (in this case country) which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? (Hebrews 12:9) My answer is Yes!
Parents Must Begin Teaching Again the Precious Lost Truths of America's Founding
I was sent for two reasons. The first reason was to warn you that if you do not repent you will perish as a nation and as a people. The second reason was to give to you parents the charge to teach your children faith in God. I am now going to rehearse to you God's hand in the events leading up to and including the founding of this nation, starting with the Magna Carta. For the most part I am going to let the people involved, or historians, present the information. Your assignment will be to teach these inspiring accounts to your children, so they will know in whom they must put their trust if they are to remain a free people. Tell your children often for me that I know that God lives for I have seen Him! This will have a powerful influence in their lives, give them the desire to learn His words, and will also give them the hope of a bright future.
Lost Testimony Number One:
Saving the Magna Carta
Although the genesis of our freedoms begin earlier than the 12th century, time constraints force me to start there. Our first vignette starts on June 15, 1215, when a group of English Barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede. This event came about as a result of the unreasonable demands and the progressive usurpation of citizen's rights by the King. Forcing King John to sign the Magna Carta was an attempt to bind the king to the rule of natural law, rather than that of selfish decrees and the right of inheritance. The barons recognized man had natural rights, which didn't have their origin with the King. This event is a monument to men's liberties, a beam of fragile light in an otherwise dark world and a critical building stone for the freedoms we enjoy and our Constitution. Most of you are familiar with this history, but may not be aware of the rest of the story.
On July 9, 1165, Stephen Langston, the key player in this story was born. He was a bright young man who eventually went to France to study French and Latin. While there he met the man who would later become Pope Innocent. Several decades after completing school, his friend, was made Pope and he in turn made Stephen Langston a Bishop and offered him the position of Archbishop of Canterbury. He accepted the position but was forced to wait several years until King John would allow him to come to England. The Archbishop of Canterbury was the most important Bishop in England since he was an advisor to the King in matters of religion and government. It didn't take Stephen long to realize the injustices of King John. He made several attempts to get the king to correct some of the injustices but with no success. Willing to risk his position and life to correct the injustices, he called a meeting of Barons and from this group he selected a smaller group to attend a secret meeting. At this meeting he showed a copy of King Henry's proclamation of 100 years earlier that addressed some of the rights he felt the people should have. From this he built his case and suggested that they unite and call the king to task and force him to sign a proclamation granting them certain rights.
Accordingly, the meeting was held and King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta. Needless to say the king was very upset and decided to take revenge and reverse the proclamation. He hired mercenaries from Europe, subsequently called Satan's Guards, to assist him in his plan. While waging war against the Barons and King Louis of France he was in the area of the Swineshead Monastery. He arrived at Sandy Shallows where the Willestream flowed into The Wash (the ocean). He had all his gold, silver and other costly possessions with him. Ignoring the advice of his knights and convinced they could cross safely, King John was the first to urge his horse into the water. He was determined to get to Swineshead Monastery that night. His guards and troops followed. It seemed certain that the whole train would get over before the tide imposed any serious barrier. What the King and his adviser seemed unaware of was that two times each day a meeting of fresh and salt water sometimes became a struggle of Homeric proportions. Just as all the wagons had entered the river the in-coming tide crashed with the exiting fresh water creating a maelstrom. The King saw his wagons engulfed with an incredible suddenness and watched as his entire treasure was carried away, never to be found. His mercenaries realizing that the king had no means to pay, abandoned his efforts and within six months the King and his campaign to destroy the Magna Carta were ended. It seems more than a coincident that the maelstrom happened precisely as all the king's wealth was at risk. Had John succeeded in his efforts to nullify the Magna Carta, the train of events leading up to the freedoms we enjoy and our constitution may not have been. For his efforts in bringing forth the Magna Carta, Stephen Langston, a very religious man and the mastermind behind it lost his position in the church and his friend the Pope. (The Conquerors, Thomas B. Costain, 1949, Doubleday & Company, Inc.)
During the next century another man was born who would introduce another ray of light into an otherwise dark and oppressive world. His name was John Wycliff. He believed that if the Bible could be translated from Latin into English and made available to the people it would eventually open the door to freedom and self-government. Accordingly, he translated the Bible into English and dedicated the rest of his life to teaching it. Although persecuted and driven he succeeded in his efforts.
Lost Testimony Number Two:
Columbus Testifies the Holy Spirit led him
Several years ago we celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus. I am sure this is one aspect of that story you never saw on TV or any of the movies produced at that time. You all know most of the story, but lets now deal with the rest of the story. You will recall that he left the Old World on 6 September 1492 with three ships. For more that ten years he had attempted to get the financing to buy ships for his voyage. In his journal he had written the reason for his motivation: "it was the Lord who put into my mind - I could feel His hand upon me - the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected with laughter, ridiculing me . . . There is not question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because he comforted me with rays of marvelous illumination from the Holy Scriptures."
On October 10, 1492, members of Columbus's crew began thinking of mutiny. The night before, October 9-10, the men could hear flocks of land birds flying overhead to the southwest and sometime could see them against the moon. Using this encouraging sign, Columbus was able to convince them to give him several more days to find land. However, in spite of these encouraging signs, there was still a smoldering contempt, as the sailors became concerned about being lost. This rebellious spirit was further nourished by trade wind gales. Finally, on the 11th, " . . . signs of land were so many and so frequent that everyone breathed more freely and grew cheerful. "Nina picked up a green branch with a little flower that resembled the dog roses on the hedges in Castile. Pinta gathered quite a collection: a cane and a stick, a piece of board, a land plant, and anther little stick fashioned as it appeared, with iron." An Indian doubtless carved it with a stone chisel. (Admiral of the Ocean Sea, A Life of Christopher Columbus, by Samuel Eliot Morison, Boston Little, Brown and Company. 1942, p. 221)
On October 12, at 2:00 a.m., land was sighted. After having suffered trials and tribulations extending over a decade, he had achieved his goal. His discovery would now provide a seed bed for the creation of a new nation. The unknown ocean would soon become a freeway for humanity seeking freedom and new opportunities. Columbus felt that Providence had provided the signs that placated his crew allowing him to discover America.
Lost Testimony Number Three:
Bible Christianity Lays Foundation of America's Liberty
Born in England two years after Columbus' voyage was another great man who built on Wycliff's efforts. His name was William Tyndale (1494-1536). He was the first person to translate the Bible into English from its original Greek and Hebrew and the first to print the Bible in English, which he did in exile. Giving the laity access to the word of God outraged the clerical establishment in England; Tyndale was condemned hunted and eventually murdered for his efforts. However his masterly translation formed the basis of all English bibles - including the King James version. His efforts helped to fulfill Wycliff's desire to open the door to freedom and self-government. The availability of the scriptures in English did precisely that. As more and more English people had access to the scriptures they started forming small separatist groups, which developed into the Pilgrims and Puritans that came to America for religious freedom.
